Warm-White Gables and a Lit Entry on a Brick Home

The project
This brick home sits at the top of a sloped front lawn, with two steep front gables, a two-story bay window, and an arched entry reached by a long set of steps. Because most people see it from the street below, the lighting had to keep the roof peaks readable from a distance.
For this 2023-2024 project in Alpine, we ran warm-white bulbs along both gables, the center roof and the eaves on the right, and outlined the arched window above the front door. A wreath marks the entry, and a cone-shaped light tree sits to the right of the stairs. From the bottom of the lawn, the gables form a sharp outline against the night sky, while the lit entry draws the eye up the steps to the door.
The challenge
The house sits at the top of a steep front lawn, so it is seen from well below, and the two front gables are tall and narrow. The entry is set back between a two-story bay window and the right wing, at the top of a long run of steps, which makes it easy to lose in the dark.
How we lit it
We outlined both front gables and the center roof in warm white bulbs, then continued along the eaves on the right, so the roofline holds together when seen from the street below. The arched window above the front door is outlined as well, which pulls a second line of light down to the entry. A lit wreath with a red velvet bow hangs on the door to finish it.
The result
From the bottom of the lawn, the two gables form sharp peaks against the night sky, and the lit arch and wreath mark the door at the top of the steps. The display is simple and reads clearly over the distance.
